Here's an email I got today from Marijuana Policy Project:

Dear friend,

I would like to thank you for all the help you have provided the Marijuana Policy Project in the past.

I am writing to see if you are interested in volunteering a few hours this spring. Because you live in District 12, your member of Congress is Kay Granger. She is a key target for MPP. We need her vote to support two important pieces of legislation: a medical marijuana bill and a bill to decriminalize marijuana at the federal level. Because of where you live, your help will go a very long way toward reforming our outdated marijuana laws.

There are a number of ways to get involved, including: organizing your friends to write and call Rep. Granger, attending town hall events, and scheduling a meeting with her staff. If you are interested, I can help you find volunteer opportunities that fit your schedule and your skills.

Please contact me by e-mail at sbhagat@mpp.org if you can help.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Sonia Bhagat

I think this is a great sign for change in Texas. MPP now wants to help us out in Texas. This is the first time I've seen them show any real interest here in a long time, and I don't think they'd do it if they didn't think we had a great chance.

MPP is a great resource. Here's their tips for talking to your congressman:

I will see you all at the next meeting

And of course at the Global Marijuana March

I went ahead and removed the duplicate posting

I removed the second posting, linked this one to the 'What You Can Do' Forum, and promoted it to the front page. Great article, it's _exactly_ the sort of thing that belongs up here and inspires folks to reach out to their legislators.

Great post!

I feel like this is missing some information... If they are trying to persuade Kay Granger, can't we be persuading ALL of the TX representatives?

It was targeted at Ryan

So it only contains the Representative that serves his district on a Federal level, I believe. The bottom line is they are targeting specific members of Congress to be lobbied in regards to these House Bills- if you live in Kay's district, she will take your input a little more seriously (little being the operative word) than someone who isn't- politicians do _try_ to listen to their constituents. If you want to find out who your Congresspersons and Senators are, you can hit up http://www.congress.org/congressorg/officials/congress/?lvl=C&azip=Your%... to find out.

Mine are (for 76051):

Federal:

President
• Barack Obama (D)

Senators
• Kay Bailey Hutchison (R)
• John Cornyn (R)

Representatives
• Kenny Marchant (R-24)

State:
Governor
• Rick Perry (R)

Senate
• Jane Nelson (R-12)

House of Representatives
• Vicki Truitt (R-98)

Thanks for sharing this,

Thanks for sharing this, Ryan! I'd like to see DFWN use this information to get others in your district onboard and active. Is there some way we can get in contact with them, like maybe at a local event...just any sort of contact, where we can inform them of this request and instantly enlist their help? Maybe a petition to submit to her, containing a statement of support for this piece of legislation?

I wonder who else, besides Kay Granger, is being targeted in Texas?

Crippy & I will be at the next meeting. Maybe if we make a couple of signs for the Million Marijuana March that specifically mention Kay Granger, they'll get a shot on the TV news, and Kay will probably see them. I know that in newspapers, whenever someone mentions a representative by name, a copy of what it printed is immediately faxed to that rep's office in DC and to the rep's office in his or her home state. And, unlike letters which are actually mailed in, the representative actually sees each one of these faxes. They are so much more urgent to the representative because so many thousands of people see them, and may be influenced (emboldened to publicly agree) by them. Maybe I'll make a Granger sign. Speaking of that, I want to remind eveyrone reading this that I do have many examples of slogans/signs/costumes on my My Space site. You don't have to be a member of My Space in order to access my site. The examples are in the "view my photos" section on my Marijuana Events page at:

Does MPP have any suggestions, besides the ones contained in their message to you?
