officially signatures are required by the government. however having worked with the topic before as an activist in another area i can tell you that e petitions are great for uses as poll data to get politicans thinking, as well as an excellent resource for the gathering of those signatures when contact info is entered (saves time knocking on the wrong doors) or e signers attend public events/meetings.
