I need to know when to buy firewood in north Texas (d/fw & surrounding areas). I moved into a house with a fireplace and this will be the first time it's ever been used. I've never had a fireplace before. What is a "rick", and how much does it usually cost? What kind of wood is most common? I'm not looking for anything fancy, as I'm on a limited income until Christmas. I just want to know what's normal; what to look for in general.
Thanks in advance for your advice and comments.

A rick or rack of wood is 1/4 cord. A cord of wood is 128 cubic feet, give or take, or one pile of 24" sticks 10' long by 6' high.
You can buy firewood anytime provided you keep it elevated and covered. It'll last about a year on an elevated rack before it starts to rot. If you tarp it and keep the rain off of it it'll last a full year, otherwise different types of wood will absorb wood and begin rotting at different speeds.
Get some nice oak or hickory as we have around here and keep it on a covered rack and it'll last from now until winter no issue. It probably won't make next winter, though.
