Cinco de Mota: The 2012 Dallas Global Marijuana March
Posted on: March 29, 2012
The Global Marijuana March (GMM) is an annual, FREE rally held at different locations across the planet. It refers to cannabis-related events that occur on the first Saturday in May, or thereabouts, and may include marches, meetings, rallies, raves, concerts, festivals and information tables depending on the city.
Here in Dallas this year, since the big day falls on Cinco de Mayo, we’re calling ours “Cinco de Mota – Festival & March.”
Sure, “mota” is Latin American Spanish Slang for “weed.” But the name acknowledges more than just Cinco de Mayo. The name is also a grim acknowledgement from our community of the more than 50,000 Mexican lives that have been lost since President Felipe Calderon launched a massive military crackdown against the cartels in 2006.
Texans want to see an end to the drug war, and the violence associated with marijuana prohibition across the world. Join us as we celebrate for legalization and the rights of all adults to consume cannabis responsibly.
We’ll have food trucks, speakers, live music, vendors, fire spinners, prizes & of course – the march. The plan is to build a party around the march, to turn it into a legalization celebration at Dallas City Hall. The party starts at 2:00. The march at 4:20!

Monkey Fist Shinobi is on the list of entertainers! They will be providing fire spinning and showcasing several different styles when the darkness arrives!
The Dallas-based Parkour/Freerunning Team, Urban Flight, will be giving a demonstration of parkour techniques in an urban setting and will add a 4th deminsion to the Festival! Check it out here:
Local artists will be displaying their work with live painting and creations made while you watch!
We’re looking for food trucks to come out for a few hours, park at our hooded parking meters on Young St. and keep our freedom festival well fed! If you’re interested in participating, email shaun[@]dfwnorml[.]org for more information. So far our confirmed food trucks are:
What we need now are vendors, or other groups to come and set up a table at the event. Artists, organizations, businesses, inventors, authors… anything will be entertained. If you have a product to sell or a message to share and it relates in a positive way to cannabis or legalization, then we want you! Know someone that might be interested? Share this video with them and ask if they’re ready to be a part of it.
As you can imagine, putting an event like Cinco de Mota together isn’t cheap, so to help offset the costs we have three sponsorship levels available. Our various levels of sponsorships reward our sponsors with exposure to our Event attendance, website visitors, Twitter followers, Facebook friends and Advertising market. This is an event that will no doubt make the local news as it has the last several years. Feed Your Head in Arlington has already jumped on board by donating a Triple-Blown Glass Piece!Email shaun[@]dfwnorml[.]org to apply.
Vendor – $100 – Set up a merchandise table/booth at the event and mentions on our Facebook Event Page & here on our website. Keep 100% of your sales. Get the same deal for $50 and a donation to our prize raffle.
Supporter – $500 – Everything from the “Vendor” option, plus the option to hang one banner at the event (in addition to the banner at your table) and have your logo on the 2,000 flyers we’ll pass out, website and call-outs from our on-stage MC throughout the event.
Freedom Fighter – $1,000 – Everything from “Supporter,” plus the option to have a 60 second video created for our site and yours, that allows you to explain why you’re a supporter of DFW NORML and cannabis legalization efforts here in Texas. And you’ll have your logo creatively included in the 24×36 event posters we’ll be selling at the event and here dfwnorml.org.
After an email exchange between DFW NORML’s Executive Director Shaun McAlister & NORML’s Outreach Coordinator Russ Belville about the Dallas Global Marijuana March, Russ mentioned on air that this year the Global Marijuana March is being called: Cinco de Mota! As far as we know, only the Dallas, Texas march is being called this – though the rest of the world is more than welcome to use this title too.
