Texas Toker Toy and Food Drive Recap
Posted on: January 2, 2013
Christmas 2012 marked our first ever Texas Toker Toy Drive, a joint effort of DFW NORML and UNT NORML! The toy and nonperishable food drive was the brainchild of University of North Texas NORML’s Executive Director, Tristan Tucker.
I served in the US Navy for most of my adult life and volunteered a few years with the Salvation Army while I was enlisted. I have always been dedicated to selflessness and promoting strength through communities. The holidays are exceptionally important times for me to volunteer and help brighten someone else’s day, because I have been on the receiving end before. When I was a kid, our house was burned down shortly before Christmas and if not for the kind efforts of the Red Cross and the Salvation Army, my family wouldn’t have had such a happy Christmas. I believe in “paying it forward” and helping fifteen families [especially families living in an area that has been devastated by both poor governmental decisions and the drug war,] was an absolutely perfect way to end the most successful year DFW NORML and UNT NORML have had to date.
Dedicated DFW NORML volunteers decorated toy boxes and despite car troubles, weather, and wind (oh my goodness WIND!) delivered them to merchants throughout the DFW area. We had ELEVEN collection points! Thanks go out to these local merchants for their support of DFW NORML and the Texas Toker Toy Drive.

The Dirty Rooster Beer & Burger Joint was our host on December 16th in Allen for The Toker Toy Drive Social. The Four Twenty Truth Car was in attendance, commandeered by DFW NORML volunteers Bryan James and Brandon Ellis! Plus, our own Pete Marrero arrived straight from DeepEllumOnAir with Mikey Burns AKA Blueprint Revolution from GLOAT Entertainment! Thanks to Budley Phatwone Green for setting this up and expanding DFW NORML’s reach to the north!
In addition to helping three of our DFW NORML families this Christmas, we were able to help additional families in need. Deacon Jesse of Nuestra Señora de Fatima (Our Lady of Faith) Catholic Church approached volunteer Max Benjamin as he was delivering toy collection boxes in the Oak Lawn area of Dallas. Deacon Jesse overheard Max repping our cause, told him about his needy parishioners, and asked if we would help! Once again, DFW NORML rose to the challenge!
Our Lady of Faith is located in Oak Lawn in Dallas, an area with a large immigrant population and very low household incomes. I had the pleasure of speaking with Father Alfredo Garcia about the Toker Toy & Food Drive and its impact on his community. “It was awesome! It was fabulous! You made 10 families and 10 children very happy this Christmas!” I asked if his church was concerned about accepting help from the National Organization for the Reform of MARIJUANA Law? Father Alfredo believes that we ALL work against stereotypes in life; and that we shouldn’t let others’ misguided perceptions get us down. “When you’re blessed with people who want to help, you accept those blessings! We thank you for blessing us. God Bless You All!”
Our first Texas Toker Toy Drive was a resounding success. We were able to provide Christmas dinner, childrens’ clothes and toys from Stoner Santa for FIFTEEN families. With just over a month to plan and willing volunteers, DFW NORML was able to make a real difference in DFW! Tristan had this to say. “Next year, we plan to do a perpetual food drive throughout the year and our goal is to deliver a U-HAUL truck full of food and toys to needy families in our area. We are winning public opinion for our organization and thus, are ending cannabis prohibition one Texan at a time.”
